hui & nui is a small web app I built for my partner and me — born out of a very honest conversation about invisible labour.

Who actually does what? And who has the feeling of always keeping things running while the other doesn’t even notice? Research shows that women in heterosexual relationships take on a disproportionate share of household tasks — not because anyone has bad intentions, but because invisible work stays invisible. The app makes it visible: every task is worth points, both partners see the score, and it runs live at the top.

Tasks

You open the app and see all shared tasks at a glance. Each task has a point value. You can reserve tasks for yourself or check them off for yourself or your partner. Green score? You’re ahead. Orange? Room for improvement.

History & Stats

What got done, when, and by whom? The history view shows everything — nothing disappears. Monthly progress charts make the trend over time visible, and a per-task champion breakdown shows who’s especially diligent at what.

Date Ideas (formerly DateJar)

A separate section stores date ideas and surfaces one at random — filtered by whether it’s sunny or rainy outside. Done ideas get checked off. And if we’re already on a date, we can jump straight into a round of Nuggle, a ear-friendly take on the letter game for two.

Stack

Next.js 15, TypeScript, Tailwind CSS and shadcn/ui with a custom neobrutalist theme. Supabase handles auth, database, and Row Level Security. Bun as the runtime. PWA support makes the app installable on iOS and Android.

The Name

Frau Hui (Howe) and Herr Nui (Nohl) are our nicknames for each other. The app is quite literally named after the two people it was built for — not a product, but software made with care for a very specific audience of exactly two.
